About Event

Every year, we hold our annual conference which aims to equip women in the maritime sector with the skills and

knowledge to grow their maritime business or maritime participation. The annual conference is also an opportunity for women in the maritime sector to network with members of sister associations, financial institutions, regulators and

other maritime professionals.

The Conference in addition, aims at building capacity amongst and enhancing the inclusiveness of women in the

maritime industry.  Thisenables women who are players in the sector to be better equipped on how to navigate the

intricacies inherent in the modern Maritime best international practices. The conference also identifies the impact of women and facilitates connection amongst players.

This year’s theme is titled; “EMPOWERING WOMEN FOR EFFECTIVE PARTICIPATION IN THE MARITIME SECTOR” and will betaking place on the 15th of October 2019. This theme has been carefully selected in recognition of International Maritime Organisation (IMO)’s 2019 Gender programme on which they noted on their own Women in Maritime programme that,  “There is ample evidence that investing in women is the most effective way to lift communities, companies, and even countries. Countries with more gender equality have better economic growth. Companies with more women leaders perform better (see study, The Bottom Line: Corporate Performance and Women’s Representation on Boards). Peace agreements that include women are more durable. Parliaments with more women enact more legislation on key social issues such as health, education, anti-discrimination and child support. The evidence is clear: equality for women means progress for all.”

Within the framework of maritime development, and through its Women in Maritime programme, under the slogan: “Training-Visibility-Recognition”, IMO has taken a strategic approach towards enhancing the contribution of women as key maritime stakeholders and encourages its member states, of which Nigeria is one, to continue to do so.This conference is therefore being organized in recognition of the work being done in this space by the IMO and

similar international and national organizations. At this conference, there will be speakers from the shipping industry, maritime professionals, maritime regulators and financial institutions.

The event will afford the Nigerian Ports Authority another opportunity to educate the general public and maritime sector participants of the good works that NPA is engaged in with respect to the development of the Nigerian maritime sector.
